The first combustion engines were not the internal combustion engines (ICEs) that we know today. Rather, they were external combustion engines that burned fuel outside the engine and used the resulting heat to generate steam, which then drove a piston or other mechanism.

The first successful external combustion engine was developed by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. This engine, known as the atmospheric engine, used the pressure of atmospheric air to push a piston up and down in a cylinder. The engine burned coal to heat water, which produced steam that was used to create a vacuum in the cylinder. The atmospheric pressure then pushed the piston down, producing mechanical work.
